What these are

Long Reads are essays that take a single aspect of the restaurant or catering business and examine it in depth. They are written by our editorial team from direct observation, conversations with owners and operators, and published research. They exist to answer the questions that matter when you are evaluating a restaurant, considering catering, or working in the food industry yourself. These are not reviews. They are investigations into the standards, practices, and decisions that separate a good restaurant from a merely competent one.

How often does The Hearth Report publish long-form essays?

We publish a new long read every two to three weeks, depending on the depth of research required and the eating season. During restaurant industry peak periods — spring and fall — we increase frequency. Our archive spans six years of independent analysis, and we add to it consistently.

Can I read these for free, or do I need a subscription?

Every long read is available free on this site. We believe industry knowledge should be accessible to restaurant operators, students, consumers, and anyone else who is serious about understanding food business. We support this through memberships and sponsorships from organizations aligned with our mission — not through paywalls or advertising.

Each long read opens with a one-sentence summary of what it addresses and who benefits most from knowing it. If you are running a catering operation, essays tagged "catering business" apply to you. If you are an investor or someone interested in the industry broadly, "economics" and "industry trends" essays are designed for your interests. Why we write them

The restaurant and catering industries are driven by decisions made on incomplete information. An owner chooses a staffing model without knowing what other operators have learned. A consumer selects a caterer without a standard to measure them against. A newcomer to the industry learns through costly mistakes that experienced people already understand. Long reads are how we level that field. We research and publish the standards, the benchmarks, and the lessons that matter. We show the details that separate the ordinary from the considered. This is the work of a food-industry publication operated independently, without advertising or allegiance to any particular segment of the industry.
